Can All Premature Babies Benefit?

Yes!

The oxygen needs of a young child's developing brain are immense, taking up to 50% of all that the infant's respiratory system can supply. The baby's physical, mental and physiological activities including digestion, dream sleep (which is vital for neurobiological growth) and immunity to infection are all oxygen demanding. The use of nutrients for growth also depends on the level of oxygen supplies available to metabolise the food by hungry cells.

According to studies published over the last 10 years, the respiratory status of the premature infant presents some real and disturbing problems. For example, premature babies are more likely to suffer from frequent troublesome symptoms at school and in adolescence than children born to term. Furthermore, follow up studies from birth to 10 years show that that abnormalities in respiratory function persist in children born prematurely.

If premature infants are also ventilated after birth, lung structure may be damaged further limiting the lung's gas exchange area that determines the overall amount of oxygen available to the body tissues. To economise in oxygen, growth and development may be affected in different ways so that the body can live within its oxygen means!

The Scotson Technique can restore a premature infant's respiratory organs. The technique improves the growth, structure and function of the lungs and respiratory muscles and thus improves the child's developmental abilities, health and energy.

TST can be learnt by all parents and it works with every child. Once mastered parents can then begin to provide their children with this transforming therapy on a daily basis.

Changes are apparent after a few weeks, even days. The overall duration of the child's need for exercises will depend on his or her respiratory status at the outset of the therapy (although your baby may like TST so much it may not want you to stop!).
